Whiplash usually occurs when you experience a sudden, intense jarring of the neck. In addition to causing pain at the cervical spine, you frequently lose some range of motion  in your neck, which results in stiffness and pain. You may also experience a cervical disc herniation, in which one of the cushioning discs of the neck ruptures, causing acute pain in the neck, shoulder and arm. Whiplash pain, especially when not treated correctly, can linger and become a chronic painful condition.
